Travels

PERU 2015

There is a long list of places that I'd like to travel to in my lifetime, and though I haven't been to them all, I've been fortunate enough to go to some magnificent sites. Just two years ago I was able to check Peru off my long list of travel destinations! It feels like just yesterday I was walking through the narrow streets and the central square of Cusco.  Cusco was once the capital of the historic Inca Empire until the Spanish conquest in the 16th century. Today the city preserves a Spanish colonial architecture but is still surrounded by indigenous Quechua culture.   During my stay, I wandered the city, ate some of the best food I've EVER eaten and met friendly locals who were enthusiastic to share the history of Cusco. A few hours after my arrival, I noticed that a vast number of people only spoke Quechua (the language of the Inca). That was probably one of my favorite things. I felt like I was traveling through time. Another thing that stood out to me about the charming city was that all the indigenous women wore hats. Tall hats, round hats, top hats, literally every style and color. But the interesting thing is that only the women wore them none of the men did. Kinda cool right? That week I bought five hats! ;D    After exploring Cusco for a few days, I went on a scenic four-hour train ride to visit Machu Picchu. The ancient city was so much more than I expected. It sat high on top of the Andes mountains and was surrounded by enormous white clouds, the clouds and mist seemed so close, and the air felt cold, the entire city looked like that of a mystical movie. Words cannot do it justice, but I hope that my images can give you even a little bit of the feeling I had from seeing this magical place.  If the opportunity for you ever arises to visit Machu Picchu, you should do so, that way you can come to understand the majestic beauty of the lost Incan city.

isla isla

A few months back my best friend Yuka and I took a trip to Isla Mujeres (a small island in the Caribbean Sea, in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico). It was her first time visiting Mexico, so naturally I was stoked to be sharing the experience with her. I discovered Isla Mujeres two years ago while exploring Quintana Roo with another good friend of mine and I completely fell in love. I always knew I would go back, and I could not think of anyone better to go there with than with my bestie. Here is a photo gallery of our stay on the Island, Enjoy!

Barcelona

During my trip to Paris last year, I decided that before coming back home I would visit Barcelona, Spain. Barcelona is only an hour's flight away from Paris, so I thought, why the hell not?! I tried convincing my friend who I was traveling with to join me on the random trip to Spain, but I was kindly rejected. I was a little bummed, but I quickly realized that this was my opportunity to travel solo. Traveling alone is something I always wanted to do but never had the opportunity or the courage to go for it, until last year. Here is a short photo gallery of the week I spent alone in Barcelona. Enjoy!

I'm not ashamed to say that I had donuts for breakfast three days that week. In my defense,  Chök has the most delicious donuts I've ever eaten!

To explore the city and see the cool narrow streets and alleyways you have to walk or ride a bike. In a cab, you'll miss all of the little hidden gems.

A nice man who was walking down the port was kind enough to take a few photos of me, and this is my favorite one. =)

During my trip, I met a student from India, who was also traveling alone. We were both hungry, so we ate together. ha! Today we continue to be friends on social media. =)

This is a traditional Spanish rice dish called paella. Since I was sitting on the beach ordering the seafood paella was a no brainer. It was my first time trying this classic dish, and I wasn't sure what to expect. Surprisingly it was delicious plus the amazing cotton candy sunset in front of me made it that much better. Without a doubt, this was one of the best things I ate in Barcelona. That was my last and most memorable meal.

"Homenatge a la Barceloneta" was designed by Rebecca Horn. It is a famous art piece on the beach of Barceloneta. The leaning tower is an iconic point of reference and apparently where many groups of friends meet to socialize.

Travel is my passion but traveling alone was a life changing experience. I discovered things about myself I didn't know before. I'll share more about that in a different post. For now, I encourage anyone who reads this to travel alone at least ones. It'll be a lesson and an adventure learning thing you don't yet know about yourself.  In life, there are many lessons that I continue to learn every day.
